Secure Systems Lab (SSLab) conducts research to advance the security, reliability, and performance of modern computer systems. We investigate core system components—often diving deep into hardware and operating systems—to uncover and address critical security vulnerabilities. We aim to translate academic innovations into practical impact by integrating deployable solutions into mainstream platforms, such as Linux.

We look for passionate hackers interested in building systems (or breaking them :)), working on challenging projects, making lasting impacts, and contributing to the open-source community.

If you are interested in applying to the lab, see For Prospective Students.

Commonly Asked Questions

Q: Fitness with SSLab?
A: We look for students who are, proactive, curious, open-minded, and driven to learn. You should be expected to continually push yourself to acquire new skills, and be willing to confront in debates.

Q: More reasons to join?
A: At SSLab, you’ll gain hands-on experience with open-source technologies supported by industry leaders. You’ll deepen your expertise and build a track record that boosts your visibility on the international stage.

The skill sets you develop via the lab’s training are generally aligned with the core competencies required by the local tech industry in software systems areas. However, the lab’s objective is not on job interviews. In fact, the depths of your technical mastery are demanded to successfully drive and complete your thesis research.

Q: Does SSLab offer stipend to graduate students?
A: Yes.

Q: What is working in SSLab like?
A: You will be assigned with a capable PC box and seat in the lab. You might be asked to TA for my class(es), in which extra stipend will be offered. The PI values close collaboration and transparent communications. We aim to provide a flexible and supportive environment to address challenging research problems.

Q: What to expect in thesis research?
A: The time taken to degree completion is primarily determined by the maturity and rigor of the student’s thesis and the successful fulfillment of their specific research objectives. We prioritize quality and depth in research training.

For MS thesis, the evaluation is about whether your work presents novel insights in addressing unresolved research questions. For Doctoral thesis, your thesis is expected to consist of materials from your research work published in distinguished peer-reviewed venues. In both cases, we also want to ensure you are well equipped with capabilities to succeed in thesis defense. Check here for the master thesis from SSLab alumni.

Q: Are you allowed to intern or work remotely?
A: Certainly. However, your thesis will be held to the same standard and you are expected to give priority to lab activities.

Q: How often do we meet?
A: We usually hold a weekly project meeting (one-one or group-based) and a lab’s seminar. Both could be either conducted online or physically. We might also hold spontaneous one-on-one meetings.
